Outdoor Research Deviator Hoody and Vest Sizing and Initial Review

OR Deviator
Outdoor Research Deviator Hoody

I purchased the Outdoor Research Deviator vest and hoody because I had been hearing a lot of great things about them. If you haven’t heard about them yet, here are a few highlights:

The front of the coat has a thin insulated layer made of Polartec® Alpha® insulation which should remain breathable and dry even when you are sweating during your adventures. The back, hood and sleeves (obviously the vest doesn’t have sleeves) are made of Polartec® Power Grid™ for enhanced airflow, breathability and comfort. It has won numerous awards including “Editors Choice” from Backpacker magazine and “Gear of the Year” from Men’s Journal and Runners World.

The main reason I purchased this was to find that one piece of gear that will keep me dry this fall and winter since I typically sweat more than any human should. Stay tuned for a follow up post where I can let you know if it is doing it’s job.

The sizing seems to run a little tight so I ended up with an XL instead of L so this may be something to consider when purchasing it. I put together a short video to go over a few of the features as well as letting you see how the sizing fits on me:

I am looking forward to seeing how this new piece of gear performs as the weather gets colder. Finding gear that actually performs the way the manufacturer describes is rare so I plan on putting this through the paces and hopefully we can add it to our Essential Gear List.
